Optimization Tips:
Common Mistakes To Avoid
Many web site owners make some common
mistakes which result in their web site not being indexed and listed by
search engines. Here are some suggestions to avoid those common mistakes
and help you optimize your web site correctly for search engine submission.
Mistake 1: No Title
Most search engines heavily weigh the title for keyword indexing. If you
do not put any word in the title tag, your web site may not be found
with any keyword search. Some search engines even show a web site
listing with a "No Title" heading, people will not be interested in clicking
an unknown link to
visit.
Tips: Make sure you type the most
important keywords in the title tag in every page. Here is a title tag
format sample:
Mistake 3: Frames
Not all major search engines follow links from web pages within the frame
set. If your home page is using frames, the rest of your web site might
not be indexed by the search engines.
Tips: If you do have frames, use
the noframes tag to include
any important keywords and web page links which will be indexed as web
page content by major search engines. Here is the noframes tag format
sample:
Mistake 4: Invisible Text
Some web site owners use some keyword text in the same color as the web
page background color or the table background color to hide the text
from the viewers and hope those text will be indexed by search engines
for higher ranking. In fact, many search engines consider invisible text
as spam and they penalize web pages that use invisible text.
Tips: Don't try to fool any
search engines or any viewers. It's not worth the risk to be banned from
the search engines. Just make the text visible on the web
page content.
Mistake 5: Overloaded Page
Many web pages show heavy loaded graphic images, java applets, video,
audio and etc. Unfortunately, many search engines consider slow pages as poor
design and will prefer to show web sites that load faster.
Tips: Try to make your home page
with less heavy loaded elements. A simple suggestion is to make
your page no more than 100k in file size.
Mistake 6: Cloned Web Pages
Some people submit cloned web pages to search engines in the hope of
getting more exposure. In fact, many search engines consider duplicated
web pages of the same content as spam and they penalize these type of
web pages.
Tips: Avoid to create cloned web
pages.
Mistake 7: Doorway Page
Some people create doorway pages to show special keywords page to
search engines and show nicely designed pages to viewers. Again, many
search engines consider doorway pages as spam and will penalize these
type of web pages.
Tips: Avoid to use doorway pages.
Mistake 8: Flash Animation
Search engines do not follow links from home pages that use flash. If your
home page is using flash, the rest of your web site may not be indexed
by the search engines.
Tips: Add title, meta description
and keyword tags on your home page to include the most important
keywords. Add a text navigation link on your home page to direct search
engine to discover the rest of your web site.
Mistake 9: Graphic Buttons
Search engines do not understand the graphic text on an image button. Any
keyword on a graphic button will not be indexed by search engine.
Tips: Add text navigation links
on your home page to direct search engine to index the keyword on the
text link.
Mistake 10: JavaScript Links
Search engines do not follow links in JavaScript. If your home page is using
JavaScript for navigation links, the rest of your web site might not be
indexed by the search engines.
Tips: Add text navigation links
on your home page to direct search engine to discover the rest of your
web site.
